EyeWriter Allows Man To Paint Despite Paralysis

Before disease took his ability to move, Tony Quan was an amazing graffiti artist. Now he is completely paralyzed, save for his eyes, and still an amazing artist. Seeing how he works left me with tear-streaked cheeks. Check it out:

Beautiful, isn’t it? Art, whether in the form of graffiti or coffee, is an individual’s contribution to humanity. And the incredible people behind the EyeWriter Initiative are making sure that not even paralysis, like Tony’s, stops someone from making such a creative contribution.The project is an open-source collaboration which seeks to continue building on their low-cost eye-tracking system and they’ve even got instructions for a DIY version of the EyeWriter.

Fukitorimushi: A Creepy Cleaning Robot

Panasonic has revealed a strange new cleaning robot at the recent Tokyo Fiber Senseware expo in Milan. The robot is wrapped in Nanofront, a special polyester cloth based on nanofibers, developed by Teijin, Ltd. The cloth can absorb oil and pick up even ultra-fine dust particles. The creepy robots drag themselves around the floor like inchworms, using light-based sensors to find the dirt ( play the video ).

The robot are also capable of finding their power station and recharging when needed. Despite the creepy appearance, the designers claim owners will develop pet-like affection for the robots before long.

RX-8 remote-controlled by iPod touch and RFID

Most car computers concentrate on adding internet access, big sound systems and complex GPS, but Jon Oxer went a few stages further. His 2004 Mazda RX-8 is connected to the internet 24/7, can be remotely controlled via an iPod touch or iPhone, and unlocked via an RFID tag implanted in his arm.

The car computer – an Alix-1, which is fast enough to run Linux and share a 3G internet connection over multiple WiFi clients, but low-power enough to run for prolonged periods from a battery – is connected to the RX-8’s OBD-II interface, so has access to the speed, RPM, intake manifold air temperature, engine load, fuel level and more. It can then send that to a remote computer.

More impressively, though, the car can be remotely started or stopped by the iPod touch, together with operating the locks; Jon can unlock the car completely key-free, using an RFID tag that he’s had surgically implanted in his left arm via an RFID reader mounted on one of the windows.

The idea is that a normal CPU processes things one at a time, like the single-paintball robot, and a GPU has parallel processors that can do (in this case) 1100 times the work in a single stroke.
