Urban Myths Exposed

Posted by: Sava Stefan 14/05/08 @ 2:49am

According to Cracked.com these are five of the most repeated urban myths.

1. You accidentally swallow about eight spiders a year in your sleep

Why it's not true:
Spiders have a natural instinct to stay alive and crawling into the heavy-breathing hot, wet mouths of animals goes strongly against this.

Who started it:
Back in 1993 a columnist for PC Professional named Lisa Holst decided to prove that you could make up anything on the internet and people would believe it.

She did this by making up a set of facts that were utterly ridiculous, the spider myth among them (which itself was taken from a collection of insect folklore that dates back to the 1950s, and emailing her findings around the world.

2. You Only Use 10% of Your Brain (but if you were only less lazy or stupid you could use more)

Why it's not true:
The parts of the brain are specialized, so trying to use all of it at once isn't going to make you any smarter.

That would be like trying to become a better writer by striving to use all the keys on your keyboard in every sentence.

Who started it?
A series of neurologists over the past few hundred years figured out that a human can survive when parts of the brain are removed.

Over time, this was misinterpreted to mean that the brain uses little of its potential, and thus the 10 per cent statistic was born.

3. Men think about sex every seven seconds

Why is it a load of rubbish?
If men thought about sex every seven seconds it would be hard to get anything done. Experts estimate that 30 per cent of men don't think about sex during the day at all.

There are variants of this myth but none of them are based on any actual research. After all, how would they even arrive at such a number?

Hook electrodes up to a guy's head and have him walk around for a week, counting how many times the sex lobe lights up?

Who Started It?
No-one knows

4. You Must Wait 30 Minutes After Eating Before Swimming

Why is it a load of rubbish?
Because you're not a Gremlin. As you may have already guessed, water does not, in fact, bear properties that form a cramp of death, should you get in the water after eating.

Getting into the water after eating will have no more effect on your body than going for a walk.

Who started it?
This one actually comes from an old wives tale that slowly became popular over the years. Supposedly, your stomach is using oxygen to digest food that your muscles need to swim.

In actuality, the amount of oxygen your body needs to swim is more than satisfied, whether or not you've eaten recently.

5. The suicide rate jumps at Christmas

Why is it a load of rubbish?
Actually, the suicide rate goes down significantly. Why? While it's depressing as hell to be alone on Christmas, the truth is most of us aren't.

It's just hard to commit suicide when there's people around constantly trying to get you to wear ugly sweaters.

Who started it?
In this case, no one fooled us more than ourselves.

As you've read people believe almost anything on the internet. When you're looking for something please check that information on different websites.

How about buying the car you want now ? Get a Car Loan

Posted by: Sava Stefan 13/05/08 @ 10:35am

If you are a teenager in high school, or a college student like me, there are a number of barriers in the way to your entry into car ownership. When you are young and invincible, you have all these starry eyed dreams about the car you are going to get, then reality sets in and you realise that there is no way you could get all that cash as fast as you plan to drive the car.

I remembered about a Car Loan service which offers a reputable source of car financing for customers nationwide.

New Car Loans can help you buy new or used cars, trucks, sport utility vehicles, or vans. And the best thing is that getting a car loan from Car Loans is fast and as always there are never any application fees when you apply online.

What are you waiting for ? Got buy that car you always wanted.

Recover your Ubuntu account password

Posted by: Sava Stefan 13/05/08 @ 10:12am

Today I installed Ubuntu in a friends PC. He is not new into computers but he wanted some pointers first on using Ubuntu.
We went through all the install steps really quickly as he knows that sort of stuff.

Because his keyboard is a lot different than mine I made a mistake when entering the password. And guess what ?! I made the same mistake twice and so the installer continued.

After it finished installing I rebooted his computer, took out the bootable CD from the drive. Everything ok until I had to login.

Now the password didn't work at all. Luckaly on my home computer I experienced some hard disk problems and I had to enter Ubuntu's recovery mode. I saw that in recovery mode you are automaticly logged in as root.

So I went to recovery mode by rebooting my friends computer and pressing the Escape key as right before GRUB loaded.

As soon as everything finished I was in a shell logged in as root. Hooray.

All I had to do was to change the password for his user by typing:

password username

and entering a new password twice. I watched the keyboard while entering the new password. I rebooted the computer again and logged in succesfully.

Of course I could have always reinstalled Ubuntu from scratch ... but this was faster.

How it all began - Rambo First Blood

Posted by: Sava Stefan 13/05/08 @ 9:54am

Rambo First Blood

You all know Sylvester Stallone and you probably first saw him as the war hero John Rambo, a perfect soldier. I know I've seen all the series and I liked every one of them.
Although I'd like Rocky to be continued ... but he ended up to old in the last part to fight anymore I can settle down for another part of John Rambo.
And guess what ... Rambo First Blood is coming to a theater near you in 2 days (May 15th).
Following the film, see the alternate ending (where Rambo dies!) for the first time ever in theatres. Plus - this one night event will include an exclusive, never-before-seen interview with Sylvester Stallone on First Blood, the new film and the iconic Rambo series.
I found about this on FathomEvents and what I really liked is that you can complete a survey or watch a trailer for Rambo First Blood.
Enjoy !

Maybe a lot of you use it and receive email reminders. But not everybody can check their email 24/7.

To set up SMS reminders all you have to do is to go to Google Calendar, login with your Google account and go to Settings. Navigating to the Mobile Setup tab you can enter your mobile number.
You will receive a confirmation code on your phone before you can use this service. After you confirm your mobile phone number remember to opt in for SMS reminder also.

The Dark Knight - A movie you just gotta see

Posted by: Sava Stefan 12/05/08 @ 6:49am

Dark Knight PosterA lot of you have watched the Batman cartoons and the movies. I remember that I was a lot younger but I stayed up late just to see another episode of Batman on Cartoon Network.

I just loved it and sometime me and my friends all grabbed a towel, put a mask or anything on our faces and pretended to be Batman. We jumped over fences, ran on the streets and scared old men and women (my favorite part).

Even if I'm 22 years old now I know I am going to watch The Dark Knight. Yeah, it's being made right now and I bet it will be a blast.

The Dark Knight movie is about Batman's seemingly-endless effort to bring justice to Gotham's crime and corrupt. Now Batman is facing a rising psychopathic criminal called The Joker. You surely know The Joker.

I expect the movie to be great, a lot of great special effects, a good story, a winning Batman and Gotham to be a quiet and peaceful city.
What I don't want for Gotham is to remain peaceful after Batman manages to stop The Joker, if he does that. It's not that I'm a criminal mind and I like chaos, I want another and another movie with Batman.

Batman's story should never stop and a movie per year should be made.
Watch the trailer and make sure you don't miss it.

Why old things are cool

Posted by: Sava Stefan 12/05/08 @ 6:14am

I like old things. I have a lot of old stuff in my workshop but I never find any use for them.
I wish I could make useful stuff like Jake von Slatt did with his old fashion Steampunk keyboard.

If you don't know what I mean just take a look at this pictures below:

He did a great job with it. You can view more details about it on the Steampunk Workshop.

Call your overseas friends cheap

Posted by: Sava Stefan 10/05/08 @ 4:43am

Do you have friends on another continent who you really like to talk to ? If yes then I've got some good news for you.
To start, let me ask you how much do you pay for 1 minute to call overseas ? I know I pay about 80 cents / minute to call in the United States from Romania.
I guess you pay a little lower than that, but it's to much anyway. I know I would like to call for only 3.5 cents / minute. Would you like your rate to go as low as that ?
You can call your overseas friends for rates as low as that with international calling cards. Using these cards you receive mobility (calling from any phone including cellular), independence from local carrier and anonymity.

The best thing is that you simply pay for the calling time in advance and reduce the prepaid balance as you make calls. To make a call you dial Toll Free Access Number, enter your PIN number and dial the phone number you wish to call.
If you don't believe me you can check out these Romania phones cards.
If your from the US and you know me ... expect a phone call.

Planning my next vacation - Summer is closer and closer

Posted by: Sava Stefan 09/05/08 @ 2:55pm

After talking about vacations in one of my previous posts I would like to share with you my plans for the next vacation.
After relaxing for 1 week in Spain (Valencia) I managed to visit the Valencia Opera House, the Serranos Towers and the City of Arts and Sciences I can say it was more than great.

Now I plan on going to India as indian culture is one of my preferred ones. I already looked around the internet for flights to India. This link leads to DialAFlight. What I like about their service is that you just need to call and speak with one of their UK travel consultants, who will ensure that all requirements are fulfilled and be sure that your tailor-made holiday is exactly as you want it!
Oh, and yeah, you can also save money by booking flights and hotels together.

Have you even been in Spain or India ? Did you manage to see what I mentioned earlier ? Have you been to India by now and would you recommend me something ?

Would you buy one of these ?

Posted by: Sava Stefan 09/05/08 @ 2:39pm

People began liking strange things ... especially if they are gadgets.
You would surely like the USB Humping Dog. It's impossible not to like so I'm not asking you anything about it. I'm just saying you already like it. What's not to like ?

But would you like to have one of these ?

The SafeType

The Safetype Keyboard

This keyboard is meant to put the keyboard in as comfortable of a position as possible. You can move the different sections to different angles, as well as take them apart and put them on your lab. However you choose it's all about putting it in such a way that makes typing more relaxed for you. You can purchase one of these for about $300.

The Wearable Keyboard

The Wearable Keyboard

A keyboard that you plug into the USB on a computer and can type while it is attached to your arm. This is not exactly made for your general home office, and is more likely to be used at a work site where carrying a keyboard is not very practical. The price varies depending on the quantity. You can receive a quote from Terralogic.

You need to be at least 1% geek to own one of these. Are you ?

Going on vacation - Rent a car

Posted by: Sava Stefan 10/05/08 @ 1:23pm

I have a driver's licence for 1 year now and I managed to become addicted to it.

Even if I go to a place near by I take the car.

But what I really dislike is when I have to go to another city or another country without the car.

I'm somewhere I've never been but something keeps me from exploring the place: taking a cab or bus. If I had a car I would go everywhere and see everything I can in my free time.

If you feel like I do lemme tell you my solution - rent a car.

I found the car rental site Advantage and their discounts look great and popped out in my eyes immediately: 19.99$ / day. That's really really cheap.

They offer their service all over the world.

Be sure to check their website if you're going somewhere. Rent a car and explore the city - you have only 1 life.

Do not loose your internet if you failed to pay the bill on time

Posted by: Sava Stefan 09/05/08 @ 8:07am

I know this happened to me once. I spent more money than I had available and I ran out of cash. Running out of cash wasn't the real problem. The thing is I forgot to pay my internet bill.
I could have borrowed the money from friends ... but you know how that is ... you don't really feel good when asking for money.
I had to watch TV for another 2 weeks until I received my salary. I receive 40% of my salary on the 1st of the month and the rest of 60% on the 15th of each month.
That wouldn't have happened if I knew about payday loans. Payday loans are small loans for short periods of time. You can borrow between 80 and 750 pounds depending on your circumstances. And they are really useful. Let's say you forget to pay a bill like me, or you have a plumbing emergency and you have no more money.

These things usually can't wait.

You to can apply for a payday loan by entering your contact details. By signing online now, PayDay can send funds to your bank today! And what I like about this service is that they also understand that people will need to borrow money for a second month. They call this a deferral. You will have to repay the charges and they suggest you pay as much as possible to reduce further charges.

Wanna be a POP Star ? Take the challenge

Posted by: Sava Stefan 08/05/08 @ 1:42am

Hey, do you remember those days when every girl you knew wanted to be either a Spice Girl, Britney Spears or Christina Aguilera ?
They all sang on the street, in their bathroom, in your bathroom, they wanted to be POP stars. Look at this video:

Did it make you laugh ? If you were eating or drinking something right now ... please clean your keyboard, desk and screen. Now that you're all clean let me tell you about the Pop Star challenge.
Alisa Apps would like to know your opinion on 2 videos: one is her video Confusion and the other will be another (already) famous pop star.
Why don't you take the challenge yourself ? Pr at least tell people which one do you think it's better ?
Oh and, can you see this original way or promoting ? I just love the idea of laughter and music. And yeah ... it's using the best place to promote ... the internet (where promoting via YouTube is free).
I see a potential ... do you ?
I took the Pop stars challenge. Comparing Alisa's video with Rihanna's - Take a bow I have to opt in for Rihanna. Of course ... a lot of cash was spent for Rihanna's video ... and enough said. With more polishing Alisa's video could have been my number 1.

11 Year-Old Takes Over as a School Network Admin

Posted by: Sava Stefan 07/05/08 @ 2:16pm

Jon PennJon Penn is a freak of nature, and we mean that in the nicest way possible. At 11 years old, Penn has become his school's network administrator, taking over the job from the previous admin who left suddenly last year. One could call into question the qualifications of Penn's predecessor, however, considering the major clean-up job the adolescent wonder has on his hands.

The school -- the Victory Baptist School in Sherwood, Arkansas -- has 60 computers that are aging terribly, since they were donated years ago and loaded with Windows 98. When Penn jumped in, he also discovered that the 60 PCs were loaded with spyware and viruses. There was no anti-virus software installed, no firewall, no gateway, all of which are important to protect the network and the PCs. In short, the whole thing was a mess.

Since taking over, Penn has pressed the school into getting the McAfee Secure Internet Gateway Appliance to protect the network and filter out spam and viruses. He has also started planning for an upgrade to Windows 2000 which will allow Penn to manage the network as a whole. Currently, all changes or installs must be done to each PC individually.

Jon hopes to obtain his A+ Certification, a computer-technician certification, this summer.

In a few years new borns will know PHP, ASP and code their own blog software.
